the iliad and odyssey are the two canonical poems of the iliad and odyssey, the epic poems written in the late 7th and early 6th century bce in greece. both poems take place on the trojan war, and both recount the adventures of a group of greek warriors. the iliad is one of the longest poems in the world, and the odyssey is the longest surviving poem in the world. each poem has 24 books, and each book is structured with a day of the battle followed by a longer narrative within the poem. the iliad and odyssey are a part of the epic cycle, which includes the cypria (in greek, epikasias), little iliad, and little odyssey. the works are a part of the classical greek epic genre.

this book is primarily concerned with greek religion, art, and mythology, and is not intended to be an encyclopaedia of all of the deities, heroes, and myths of greek antiquity. it does, however, contain brief discussions of the gods and heroes of the so-called classical pantheon, and a brief overview of the major myths and legends of the greek world and the origin of greek civilization.
(overview of content by gregory nagy in the translation and in pindars homer)

in the iliad, the strife of the achaeans against the trojans is the central dramatic action, the space in which the epic poem is set. the poem was, however, composed over a long period of time. in the poem, the struggle of the achaeans is only one strand in a broader tapestry, woven with moments of peace, banquets, and sporting events, as well as the sufferings of the dead. the narrative element is set within a broad historical context, as the achaeans, and their allies, are involved in a long-running war of conquest with the neighbouring city-states of the aegean, such as athens, corinth, sparta, and thebes. this war is known as the trojan war, after the first city attacked. the poem, however, is set in a mythical past.

pythagoras (570-495 bce) was a greek mathematician, philosopher, and teacher who is credited with being the first mathematician. he was a founder of the school of philosophy known as pythagoreanism. along with his student plato, he was one of the first to use the term “philosophy.” later, he was called the “father of philosophy.”
this statue was made around 200 bce and was discovered in 1876, in a roman sarcophagus in a villa in the neighborhood of palmyra, in the syrian desert. it was found to be the supposed mortal remains of antiochus iv, king of the seleucids.
this statue was made in the first century ce. the head was found in syria, whereas the body is thought to be roman. the inscription on the base, which has been lost, is thought to read: “belonging to the philosopher and mathematician archytas of tarentum.”
the story of how athens won its independence from sparta and became the leading city of the greek world is a classic tragedy of democracy.thucydides was a close student of the peloponnesian war and his account of the events is both the culmination of his studies and a reminder that, at least in the long run, the greatest threat to any democracy will come from within the system itself.thucydides shows that democracy is a fragile, constantly vulnerable form of government. in athens, the problem was compounded by the fact that the athenians were not only in the habit of electing the chief archon every year but also the general assembly of the people every year. no wonder the system collapsed.
sophocles was born in aigina, the daughter of the poet who invented the athenian harmonic poetic meter.he spent the early part of his career in the service of the powerful alcmaeonid family, whose fortunes he helped to maximize. but in the late 460s he turned against them and founded a new order of tragic poets, that of the deipnosophists, whose poems were designed to educate and enlighten rather than to entertain.he was perhaps the first greek to respond to the needs of post-homeric times.but his most important contribution is the invention of the ode, which he developed into a structure for a long (four-line or tetrameter) poem in honor of an individual, who in his case is most often a friend or foe.
