Finally a hardware solution which is to reset all batteries EEPROM, leaving it in a messy state, a lot of junk is written on it, and smart battery firmware checks it to check if the battery is still under warranty, SMBus message or 3.3V voltage is sent to it, if it recognizes it, it changes state into state which you can see in the firmware. It may only bricked if the firmware doesnt recognize it, if it is recognized, it tries to reset it to sane state and it should work after that. This means that normal user can access battery without power, but person who has physical access to battery (professional or amateur, like what I do) will have to brick it.

From what I understand the smart battery firmware check EEPROM and if it recognizes it, it tries to reset all the Li-ion cells to sane state. This is fairly nasty thing to do, because user wont see any problem as all the cells work. Battery is bricked and most of the cells are already discharged and will stay empty (it might still work, but it will not last long). User will probably never ever see that anything is wrong with the battery, since batteries would only be changed under warranty. With ARM-based CPUs we never see any issues in batteries, so it will be very hard for us to notice anything wrong. Some class-action lawsuits which I am not going to remember maybe not there for it since it is not sold by factory, it is sold by service provider, who isnt responsible for things like thats.

If we compare this to a laptop (or even desktop or similar) where system is more complex, there are bunch of software solutions that do EEPROM programing, backup, etc and it is always possible to replace all cells and recover, and lots of vendors do it, thus it is easy to completely remove batteries and recover. Here is where we are, nobody will ever care about it.
